tips for organising smaller wardrobes

Its so amazing to have a huge walk in wardrobe but realistically most people have smaller spaces and you need to be creative about how you store items in order to stay organised! Just because you have less space doesn’t mean you cannot stay organised and create a calm space to get ready in.

  1. The first step is to declutter, and this needs to be a recurring activity as we do accumilate more clothes over the years and its a good opportunity as seasons change to have a look through our wardrobes and see what could be donated or sold and what needs to stay. For charity collection I use icollect which pick up the items from your home and you can choose the charity you would like to donate to, which is lovely. For selling I use vinted, as its super easy to upload and sell items quickly.

  2. Think about putting away seasonal clothing, pack up your summer things into baskets or storage bags and store on higher shelves in the winter and then switch around as the weather changes. If there isn’t much space in the wardrobe, think about using a spare bedroom to give you the most space for items you will be wearing for that currentcseason.

  3. My biggest advice when creating a system would be to try and use shelves for shoes, bags and thick jumpers - for clothes; hanging and drawers are most effective. Shelf dividers are really useful to maxmise shelf space and give you the most storage as well as keeping things neat and tidy.

  4. I get clients to add in rails to existing wardrobes, as often there is so much wasted space, which is not useful when dealing with smaller rooms. Whether its too much long hanging or too many awkward shelves, measure your wardrobe and get an additional extending rail to fit your wardrobe for more effective storage of your clothes.

  5. Got a spare wall? Why not add an open hanging rail to fit on for extra storage of hanging items. You can store so many more clothes by hanging them.

  6. Slim hangers are a must, other hangers can take up so much space so make sure you get your clothes hanging on these so that you can fit more clothes into your wardrobe.

  7. If you have lots of skirts or shorts, consider getting one of these space saving hangers, which will allow you to hang multiple items on one hanger meaning less space is taken up in the wardrobe.

  8. Drawer dividers are also a key item I take with me to organise wardrobes. They help ensure your clothes, from underwear to gym leggings stay in place and are categorised so that theres no room for mess inside your drawers.

  9. Consider placing shoes in a unit in the hallway, and adding in more hanging space for optimum storage. Shoe’s don’t need to be in the wardrobe, so its an easy item to be moved elsewhere. Or you could even get one of these handy shoe storage bags which could fit under the bed and store either seasonal shoes, or shoes worn less often.

  10. Jewellery is forever getting tangled up and shoved into lots of bags where it gets hidden and never used. My favourite storage is this box, as you can add on tiers if needed and it looks beautiful too.
