make your own barbiehouse

I love creating toys for the kids, even though my painting skills and patience isn’t the greatest - its so much fun to put a creative spin on toys. I find that Barbie houses are especially huge, and I wanted to create something smaller whilst still keeping it fun for the kids.

I knew I wanted to put the house in the girls room and I had a specific space for it which meant my options were limited! After measuring the space and checking measurements of Barbies, I found that the IKEA ‘eket’ system was perfect, 2x across and 3x high would be perfect and give me space to have some fun.

I decided to paint the IKEA EKET unit the same colour as the girls room ‘Farrow & Ball Templeton Pink’ and then decorate each room with a fun theme buying items from Amazon and using some bits we had here. I bought a couple of the Barbie items new but most of it was from Vinted.

  1. Disco Room - possibly my favourite room with a vintage Sindy disco from Vinted and it still plays tunes. I got a disco ball, and the sparkly walls from Amazon. The stick on mirror was from Ikea.

  2. Pool Room - The windows were actually left over from an Orchard Toys game, and the wallpaper was left over from my Mum’s renovation and the fake grass was also from my stash at home. The pool was a bargain from Vinted ;)

  3. Wardrobe - This was hard to source as all the Barbie ones were just an inch too big so I ended up sourcing a dolls wardrobe from Amazon and getting the chair from Vinted ;)

  4. Living Room - furniture was Barbie, but second hand from Vinted and the rug was a sample from the kids Poodle & Blonde blind

  5. Garage - We had the Barbie car, and I ordered a load of Barbie stickers for the wallpaper

  6. Ice Cream - who needs a kitchen when an ice cream bar is way more fun! I made the wallpaper by using sticky back plastic and spreading sprinkles (non edible ones) and sticking it on. I bought the Ice cream shop new

Creating the Barbie house myself meant that it fitted into the space I wanted and I also got to show my girls that not everything has to be brand new, and sometimes its more fun to get second hand. It’s also fun to have something that noone else has, and the girls spend hours playing with it !
